Course Overview:
This course is designed to enhance awareness and understanding of oral cancer among dental professionals. Participants will explore what oral cancer is, how it presents clinically, its key risk factors, and the essential role the dental team plays in its early detection and referral. The course also covers how to communicate effectively with patients and provide appropriate advice and emotional support.

- To reinforce the importance of routine soft tissue examinations and early detection.
- To support effective patient communication, documentation, and referral processes.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Define oral cancer and identify areas of the mouth it commonly affects.
- Recognise key risk factors contributing to the development of oral cancer.
- Identify the most common signs and symptoms of oral cancer.
- Understand the dental team’s role in early detection and routine screening.
- Respond appropriately to “red flags” and understand the urgent referral process.
- Communicate clearly and sensitively with patients who may be at risk or undergoing referral.
- Offer relevant lifestyle advice and encourage preventive behaviours.
- Maintain accurate records that support patient monitoring and continuity of care.
